Chapter Eleven

It was a little after midnight before we were ready to go. Aidan no longer protested going with me, after admitting in a roundabout way that he hated the thought of me leaving without him. Before we walked to my car, he gathered his school supplies, some extra clothes, and little odds and ends, filling his backpack to the point where he almost broke the zipper closing it. All I had were the clothes on my back. Thankfully, he let me borrow one of his plain white tees, although my chest was broader than his and I was a couple inches taller, so it was more snug than I would have liked.

I caught Aidan eying me from across the room as he grabbed his cell phone and shoved it into his pocket, admiration clear on his face. “Looks good on you.”

I looked down at myself and grimaced. “I feel like it’s clinging.”

His shy smile widened into a mischievous grin. “Exactly.”

Oh. I saw myself from his perspective and gained a new appreciation for the tight-fitting shirt.

I stopped by the door with my hand on the knob. “You ready to go?”

“I think so. How far away is it?”

“About an hour and a half. I won’t make you stay any longer than necessary. Will you be able to keep up with school?”

He nodded. “The professors put everything on the university’s website. Pretty much all my work can be submitted online. I can just e-mail them that I’m sick with mono or something.”

“Good idea.” Without thinking, I took his backpack from him and draped it across my shoulders. It felt weightless to me, so I thought I’d relieve him of the burden.

His face reddened, and he said in an irritated tone, “I’m a big boy. I can carry that all by myself, you know.”

I rolled my eyes, refusing to give it back. “Come on.”
